The heart of the property is formed by large grown trees. We want to use them as the starting point to create and environment that offers incentives to live together. Whilst designing this natural heart as well as the gaps leading up to it, we had design goals in mind, but much more than that: We purposefully did not want to create a secluded space. We rather believe that children of all backgrounds should grow up in an environment, that encourages them to find their limits and overcome them step by step. Placed at the border from perimeter blocks to open structures, we form a closed ring, whilst adding houses in the park. The surrounding buildings are being used as a starting point to create an urban landscape, that embeds itself in the city. The position of the the courtyards create two gaps, which lead up to the space around the trees. It is a space that is not just passive area to look at, but instead – following traditional village communities – can be actively used by all inhabitants. Alongside the gaps, several layers form the base of the buildings. These form three groups around a courtyard each. An edge on seating height separates the communal space from gardens and hedges. Lastly, the interior courtyards offer protection for the smallest of our children: private gardens are grouped around central playgrounds.

Tongling Recluse Tongling, China 2017

In today’s architectural practice in China, tradition and modernity are interwoven and coexist together, just like this Tongling Recluse. It is located in a remote village in the north of Anhui Province originally a normal folk house in the style of Huizhou and Yanjiang. Nested on the top of the mountain, this small house had been uninhabited for the last 10 years and the decay had already begun when we started the project. But we couldn’t simply build it up, since the space program required more floor area than originally available. In a first step, we therefore extrude the traditional building with saddle roof on both face sides. This already extended volume is now blended with a new volume of the same cross-section. The façade jumps back in parts; the roof becomes a canopy and sun protection. Finally, a glazed joint across the building allows for an important view of the village. Even though the design process is based on a contemporary approach, the building is rather traditional in a number of ways, for example details take up traditional techniques and local materials were chosen.

4 Seasons Gardens Ulanbaataar, Mongolia 2014 - 2016

The “4 Seasons Gardens” in Ulaanbaatar offer apartments and townhouses with exclusive features. Designed in a traditional English style, the urban layout of the residence follows typical European models with a centrally located palace and U-shaped wings on both sides leaving the middle part of the site open as a landscape park. The project also offers a wide choice of restaurants, cafes, shops, grocery stores and community facilities for both the residents of the community and the surrounding neighborhood. The residence will set an example not only in terms of the connection of living and relaxing, but also regarding energy-efficient design and saving of primary energy. The objective is the implementation of a residential project with a high climatic comfort, high ecological standards and low carbon emissions. The residence “4 Seasons Gardens” will serve as a role model in the urban development of Ulaanbaatar.

Society Hill Stage I Tianjin, China 2005 - 2007

Contrary to current practice in China, which is to create density with high-rise buildings, our concept is based on a building typology derived from the traditional Chinese courtyard house. All types of houses have their own private garden or roof terrace. There are 2-storey houses with a courtyard, 3-storey row houses, condominiums and villas. Harmony is achieved across the housing development by using brick facades and by an open architectural design; within this overarching unity, the individuality of the various quarters are underlined by different tones of plaster. The centre consists of two to three storied houses. Four to five storied houses will be constructed on the outskirts, which will also include a children day care center and a sports and recreational club. The average number of floors constructed in the first phase is 0.8. The size varies from 85m² for apartments to 350m² for the villas.

New Urban Living Bonn, Deutschland 2016

Residential blocks with private coutyards are grouped around a cental, open space. We keep this significant part of the competition area as a landscape park for the district. As a place for an integrative encounter, the park promotes the identification and cohesion of the mixed neighborhood.  “Living at the park” becomes the characteristic quality and address for the the new city district.

Society Hill Stage II Tianjin, China 2006 - 2008

The second phase of the Society Hill Projects continues the concept of the previous phase. The urban planning concept and the existing typologies were re-designed and supplemented with new typologies. Five story apartment buildings towards the south relate to the urban scale of the first construction phase on the opposite side of the road, while in the north 10 to 12 story apartment buildings form the northern edge towards the city centre’s green space . A new building typology of semi-detached townhouses supplements the existing inner cluster of structures. Brick and stucco remain the characteristic building materials while brighter colours of the buildings along the northern edge emphasize their particular importance in the urban plan. The average density of 1.0 is about 0.2 higher than in the first phase.

Green Sky Residential Wuhan, China 2005

Our residential buildings along the boulevard buildings form the southern border of the newly built Hongshan District in Wuhan. The building structure opens at the very prominent location to build a public plaza reached by stair landscape. The solitaire high-rise building marks the end. Clubs, Restaurants, conference rooms and entertainment facilities are situated at the east end of the boulevard building. The ground and first floor are reserved for high-quality business, office and special functions. The living rooms of the flats are oriented to the boulevard. Prefixed coloured balconies and shear-walls give privacy and structure the facade.

Marina Cove Gardens Suzhou, China 2007 - 2008

The Marina Cove Gardens are situated next to the Chin-Ci-Hu Lake in Suzhou. The architectural design is inspired by the european modern classic design. Simple shapes and reduced material choice – quite unusual for construction in China – determine the character  the 20 single-family homes and 8 apartments, built in highest standard. They are grouped into 3 – to 4-storey buildins along the artificial grachten and ponds, all providing an excellent view of the Chin-Chi Hu lake.
