Top of the Cloud Xi'an, China 2018 - 2019

The project uses the revolving plane of the whole floor as an open public space. A series of abstract “installations” related to the traditional planning of space are incorporated into the circular spatial experience sequence. These spatial objects greet and guide visitors on their way to wine and dine at the restaurant, in an attempt to present a continuous spatial scroll with contemporary Xi’an atmosphere and style through the translation of the physical space rather than flat symbols.

Sense Cafe Beijing, China 2019

We recreate Beijing there, where Siheyuan is a spatial metaphor. The intention of urban mobility is through the remodeled chamber and a series of soft spaces in the courtyard. Border relationships of ancient cities are broken here, leading people to shuttle through the city and enter the images intertwined with ancient impressions and contemporary perceptions.

The base concept for this pop-up store for Nescafé intends to blur the line between architecture and installation, therefore a free shaped golden dome inserts itself into the historical surroundings. Transformed into a free form, metallic curtains create space, which reacts to the versatile interaction of doors, windows and plants. This connecting piece stretches into the connecting rooms, where it connects to different areas. These rooms then are individually designed to match the newly presented Nescafé products.

Sunshine Academy Luanping, China 2017

The Sunshine Academy is surrounded by scenic landscape. The Luan River flows along the foot of the Yanshan mountains Range, where the Jinshanling Great Wall is forming one of the most dangerous sections of the Great Wall. The Sunshine Academy uses this rich natural setting to form a hotel whose architecture focuses on framing selected views of both river and surrounding mountain ranges. Those outward views are alternated with inward orientated courtyards, forming an overall calm and contemplative atmosphere. The architectural expression takes advantage of the traditional building methods and transforms them into a more modern, curved design approach. The result is a Zen like space reminding of the Chinese academies of old, where the courtyards formed offered a sense of meaning and depth.

Chengdu Banyan Tree Hotel Sichuan, China 2018

The Banyan Tree in Chengdu is a wellness hotel in the southern Chinese province of Sichuan. Far cantilevering roofs welcome visitors at the entrances to hotel and spa, and accentuate the arrival at a place of recovery and reflection. The theme of retreating from the outside is picked up in the architecture of the hotel; it shields its visitors from the outside, opening framed views to the inside instead. Small courtyards are associated to the guestrooms and offer a view into the green and privacy at the same time. Gaps between the buildings and courtyard walls connect lobby, restaurant, spa and guestrooms and converge in larger yards. Here the element water dominates the theme: from large basins on higher ground waterfalls pour into swimming pools and steam baths and create a composition with landscape and architecture. A reduced selection of architectural materials emphasizes the feeling of purity.

Boutique Hotel Sichuan, China 2018

The site is adjacent to the wetland park in the north and the paddy fields which are typical for this region of China in the east. The Boutique Hotel should radiate a generosity and openness appropriate to the surrounding landscape; on the other hand the property should be used economically. By responding to different influencing factors in various directions of the site (the surrounding landscape of the site, different functional streamlines, etc.), the unit space blocks are reorganized according to functions and traffic flow lines. A large, curved roof extends over all those blocks and creates protected connections and transitions. Introducing the water system of the paddy into the base, the space quality and micro-environment quality in the base increase while maintaining the continuity and integrity of the landscape.

Nanjing Five Seasons Jinling Hotel Nanjing, China 2015

The Wuji Jinling Eco Hotel is designed to be the first boutique wellness hotel in Nanjing. The simple and Buddhist living space promoted by Chinese traditional health theory is the starting point of our architectural design. We combine the element of traditional Chinese garden with a contemporary architectural approach in a way that Chinese and Western elements merge harmoniously to a high quality architectural space. In addition to the clear relationship between architectural volume and simplified facade design, we created courtyards for the hotel rooms with Chinese design features to form a climate of Chinese Garden. The complex is open to the urban landscape to the west. Hence the urban green is induced to the courtyard and every corner of the architectural space to form a vertical, diversified green space. This is a kind of direct experience to green building and emphasizes the spatial concept of eco-hotel. The Eco Hotel is located in the heart of Nanjing Software Valley. With only 10-minute drive to the Nanjing South Station and metro station at the North east corner, the site enjoys huge transportation benefits.

Huaian Conference Center and Hotel Fuzhou, China 2013

Since ancient times, Fuzhou is famous for its spas. The International Conference Center includes about 160 acres of tourism landscape part. Phase II of the Conference Center is located in the north-west of Huaian, directly on the shores of the Min Jiang river. The project consists of two smaller, separate club houses with meeting and dining facilities and one conference center with guest rooms, all facing the river.Rather than trying to stand out, our approach for the Conference Center is rather blending into the natural environment of the surrounding landscape. All central service and conference facilities are organized in a podium, while the guestrooms are organized in seven floors above, organized in an international, resort style hotel scheme. The facade is organized horizontally, using wooden elements as screen for the balconies of the hotel rooms. In order to visually reduce the massing of the building, the volume of the conference center is folded twice.

Haixia Exhibition Center Hotel Fuzhou, China 2013

The Haixia Hotel is part of the new convention and exhibition district in the east part of Fuzhou. The three towers located at the main street have separate functions: one office tower and two hotel towers. To make place for a public plaza facing the river, central functions which are usually located in the first floors of an hotel (event hall, restaurant, bar and KTV) are relocated in the upper floors as lifted podium that connects the two hotel towers. In order to satisfy the requirements for sunlight and ventilation of the hotel rooms of the main tower, a bigger hole was cut out of this overhanging podium. On top of the podium is a rooftop skybar with great view over the lake.
